Elizabeth I Notes

  • James VI of Scotland took
  • Elizabeth was the daughter of Anne Boleyn
  • She is protestant
  • She changes England back to Protestantism
  • She was considered a bastard by her own father Henry VIII
  • She ruled for 44 years
  • Embraced the conflict of being a monarch and a woman
  • Her name inspired the Elizabethan Age
  • Henry was married to Catherine, but she could not produce a son so he divorced her and married Anne Boleyn
  • Mary was sent to be one of Elizabeth's lady in waiting and she was humiliated
  • Mary was very unhappy and there was tension between the two girls
  • In 1534 a law was passed that the only heirs that would be legitimate were those birthed by Anne
  • Anne miscarried a son and Henry made a plan to dispose of her
  • She was indicted for adultery and executed
  • Elizabeth was declared a bastard like Mary
  • She was very private, secretive, and proud
  • Henry married Jane Seymour
  • Jane gave birth to Edward
  • Jane died shortly afterword
  • Elizabeth was very smart
  • Elizabeth was fascinated by her father's wealth and power
  • Henry eventually died
  • Edward was the heir to the throne
  • He was only ten years old and too young to rule so Henry set up a regency
  • Seymour Edward's uncle became ruler for the regency
  • Seymour moved in with Katherine Parre and Elizabeth
  • Seymour used to sexually abuse Elizabeth and Katherine eventually put a stop to it but she blamed Elizabeth for it
  • Seymour pursued Elizabeth even more and it was rumored that she was pregnant by him which she was not
  • Elizabeth's brother Edward stopped talking to her
  • Seymour was executed
  • Edward became sick and died
  • There was a big struggle for the throne for the next few days but Mary became queen
  • Elizabeth was the next in line for the throne after Mary
  • Mary married Philip of Spain
  • Mary wanted to turn England back into a Catholic nation so she burned people who refused to change from Protestantism
  • Mary placed Elizabeth in house arrest
  • Mary and Elizabeth had to be reconciled
  • Philip returned to Spain losing interest in his wife
  • Mary was baron and she allowed Elizabeth to become queen as long as she left England as a Catholic nation and paid off her debts
  • Mary died and Elizabeth became queen
  • She believed she had been chosen by God to be queen of England
  • She refused to get married and surrender her independence
  • She flaunted her availability
  • Robert Dudley had a good relationship with Elizabeth
  • But he was married
  • He killed his wife and Elizabeth sent him away from the court
  • Elizabeth became very ill with small pox
  • Mary Queen of Scots was Elizabeth's cousin
  • Mary fled to England from the protestants in her country
  • Mary was Elizabeth's prisoner for 19 years
  • People wanted her to be freed and become the queen of England
  • Elizabeth could not bring herself to kill Mary
  • Elizabeth brought Mary to court and she was convicted with a conspiracy to kill Elizabeth and she was executed

  • She was attracted to Henry of Anjou and marriage was greatly considered
  • Robert Dudley was against the idea
  • Elizabeth saw this as her last chance
  • She was in her mid-forties and she could never have children as the heir

  • The Elizabethan Age was seen of one of victory
  • Elizabeth hates change
  • Sir Walter Raleigh found Virginia
  • Robert Dudley soon died
  • He was the love of her life
  • Robert Deveroux the Earl of Essex was a suitor for Elizabeth
  • He was the stepson of Robert Dudley and he was 19 and she was 53
  • She really loved him so much that he abused her and she still loved him
  • He was tried for treason and condemned to death
  • Elizabeth knew her end was near
  • She decided that she did not want to live and longer and she decided that James VI would succeed her
  • She died when she was 69
  • London's grief was unprecedented
  • She left the country with all of the problems that she had ignored
  • his place as king of England
